Growing Thumbelina Heirloom Carrot
‘Thumbelina’ is an heirloom carrot variety and a 1992 AAS Winner. A 100-year-old heirloom that recently won the prestigious AAS Award for its sweet, crunchy texture and wide adaptability. Small, golf ball-sized globes are sugary sweet and tender with mild herb hints. Baby size fruits require no peeling and retain their pumpkin-colored orange skins even when cooked.
Sow ‘Thumbelina’ directly in the garden. Plant seeds about ½ inch deep, space plants 2 - 4 inches apart, and grow in full sun / partial shade. This variety is well suited to containers.
Around 60 days to maturity, begin checking ‘Thumbelina’ and harvest the roots once they reach the desired size while they are still tender.
‘Thumbelina’ is especially well suited for fresh eating, canning, and storage.
