Red Russian Kale
Growing Red Russian Kale
‘Red Russian’ is an heirloom, open-pollinated kale prized for its tender frilled foliage, prominent veining, and mild, sweet flavor. Beautiful serrated leaves add ornamental appeal to the garden while offering excellent cold tolerance for harvests that can continue into early winter.
Start ‘Red Russian’ indoors for transplanting or sow directly where conditions allow. Plant seeds about ½ inch deep and space plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade. Its compact growth also makes this variety well suited to smaller gardens and patio plantings.
Ready to harvest in about 50 days, pick young leaves for the most tender texture or allow them to grow larger for cooking.
Mild, colorful, and versatile, ‘Red Russian’ is excellent for fresh eating, salads, sautéing, soups, and ornamental edible plantings.
