Waltham Butternut Winter Squash
Growing Waltham Butternut Winter Squash
‘Waltham Butternut’ is an award-winning open-pollinated winter squash and 1970 All-America Selections Winner prized for its thick flesh and classic sweet, nutty flavor. Large bottle-shaped fruits have light tan skin, small seed cavities, and thick cylindrical necks, with approximately 80% solid flesh.
Sow ‘Waltham Butternut’ directly in the garden about 1 inch deep and space plants about 24 inches apart. Grow in full sun. This heat-tolerant variety performs especially well through warm summer conditions.
Ready to harvest in about 105 days, pick fruits once fully mature and their tan rind has hardened.
Sweet, dense, and versatile, ‘Waltham Butternut’ is excellent for roasting, soups, baking, purees, everyday cooking, and storage.
