Tronchuda Heirloom Kale
Growing Tronchuda Heirloom Kale
‘Tronchuda,’ also known as 'Portuguese,' is an heirloom, open-pollinated variety prized for its exceptional heat tolerance, large blue-green leaves, and mild cabbage-like flavor. Broad, paddle-shaped foliage develops prominent white veins and forms a loose head with an appearance similar to collards.
Start ‘Tronchuda’ indoors for transplanting or sow directly where conditions allow. Plant seeds about ½ inch deep and space plants 8 to 12 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade. This variety handles both heat and cold well and is also suited to containers.
Ready to harvest in about 70 days, pick leaves at the size you prefer, taking younger growth for a more tender harvest.
Mild, sweet, and hearty, ‘Tronchuda’ is excellent for soups, stews, sautéing, braising, and everyday cooking.
