Growing Information

Growing Vardaman Sweet Potato Plants

‘Vardaman’ is a compact, bush-type sweet potato variety prized for its space-saving growth habit, dependable yields, and rich orange flesh. Smooth, golden-yellow roots develop moist, stringless interiors with excellent eating quality, while the tidy plants stay more contained than traditional sprawling sweet potato vines.

Plant ‘Vardaman’ sweet potato slips after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has thoroughly warmed. Choose a location in full sun with loose, well-drained soil, and space plants about 12 to 18 inches apart. Its compact growth habit makes it especially well suited to containers, raised beds, smaller gardens, and edible landscaping. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while plants become established.

Ready to harvest in about 100 days, dig roots once they have reached a useful size and before cold weather arrives. Harvest carefully to avoid bruising or cutting the skin, then cure freshly dug sweet potatoes before eating or storing for the best flavor and keeping quality.

Moist, flavorful, and versatile, ‘Vardaman’ is excellent for baking, roasting, mashing, and everyday cooking. Its attractive, compact growth also makes it a strong choice for decorative borders and other edible landscape plantings.

Shipping Notice: Sweet potato plants ship directly from our supplier on a seasonal schedule. Most orders begin shipping around mid-April, with shipping continuing through June 5th. Because timing can vary, we recommend planning for delivery no earlier than April 15th.

Vardaman Sweet potato slips

Slips were in pretty bad shape when received. I had 10 slips survive. It is still pretty cool here at night but they are living and look very healthy. Looking forward to having many sweet potatoes.
