Growing Texas 1015Y Supersweet Onion Plants
‘Texas 1015Y Supersweet’ is a short-day onion prized for its large size, mild flavor, and dependable performance in Southern gardens. Softball-sized bulbs develop light yellow skin and crisp white flesh with sweetness comparable to a Vidalia-type onion.
Plant ‘Texas 1015Y Supersweet’ onion transplants in full sun, setting them about 1 to 1½ inches deep and spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Choose loose, well-drained soil and water thoroughly after planting to help the transplants establish. As a short-day variety, it is especially well suited to Southern regions, though it can also perform farther north than many traditional short-day onions.
Ready to harvest in about 175 days, pull onions once the bulbs have reached full size and the tops begin to naturally fall over. Allow the bulbs to cure thoroughly before storage. ‘Texas 1015Y Supersweet’ stores fairly well for a sweet onion.
Mild, crisp, and sweet, ‘Texas 1015Y Supersweet’ is excellent for fresh eating, salads, sandwiches, burgers, grilling, roasting, and everyday cooking.
