Sierra Blanca Hybrid Onion Plants
Growing Sierra Blanca Hybrid Onion Plants
‘Sierra Blanca’ is a 2001 All-America Selections Award-winning hybrid onion prized for its impressive size, glossy white bulbs, and exceptionally sweet, mild flavor. Formerly known as ‘Super Star,’ this widely adapted white onion can produce bulbs weighing up to 2 pounds while still offering fairly good storage potential.
Plant ‘Sierra Blanca’ onion transplants in full sun, setting them about 1 to 1½ inches deep and spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Choose loose, well-drained soil and water thoroughly after planting to help the transplants establish. As a day-neutral variety, ‘Sierra Blanca’ can be grown successfully across a wide range of regions.
Ready to harvest in about 105 days, pull onions once the bulbs have reached full size and the tops begin to naturally fall over. Allow the bulbs to cure thoroughly before storage to help maintain their quality.
Sweet, mild, and versatile, ‘Sierra Blanca’ is excellent for slicing, salads, sandwiches, grilling, roasting, sautéing, and everyday cooking. Its combination of large size, adaptability, and mild flavor makes it a dependable choice for gardeners in many different growing regions.
