Scarlet Runner Bean
Growing Scarlet Runner Bean
‘Scarlet Runner’ is a vigorous runner bean prized for both its excellent eating quality and striking ornamental value. Tall vines can reach up to 10 feet and are covered with bright scarlet-orange flowers from midsummer until frost, making this variety as beautiful in the garden as it is productive.
Sow ‘Scarlet Runner’ directly in full sun, planting seeds about 1 inch deep and spacing plants 4 to 6 inches apart. Provide a sturdy trellis, fence, or other support for the vigorous climbing vines as they grow.
Ready to harvest in about 75 days, ‘Scarlet Runner’ produces slender pods about 8 inches long. Pick pods while young and tender for the best eating quality, or allow them to mature for the distinctive shiny black-and-purple mottled seeds.
Tender, flavorful, and versatile, the pods can be enjoyed as fresh beans, while the mature seeds can be shelled and cooked. The showy flowers also make ‘Scarlet Runner’ an excellent choice for edible landscapes, trellises, and ornamental garden plantings.
