Growing Information

Growing Red Wing Hybrid Onion

‘Red Wing’ is a hybrid onion prized for its large globe-shaped bulbs, rich color, and excellent storage ability. Glossy skins range from dark red to deep purple, while dense, solid flesh delivers a pleasant touch of pungency for classic onion flavor.

Start ‘Red Wing’ indoors for transplanting or sow directly where conditions allow. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep and space plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Grow in full sun. This cold-tolerant variety is also well suited to containers.

Ready to harvest in about 110 days, lift bulbs once mature and cure them thoroughly. Properly handled bulbs can maintain quality for approximately six to eight months.

Richly colored, firm, and versatile, ‘Red Wing’ is excellent for everyday cooking, roasting, slicing, and long-term storage.
