Rattlesnake Heirloom Pole Bean
Growing Rattlesnake Heirloom Pole Bean
‘Rattlesnake’ is a century-old heirloom pole bean prized for its distinctive purple-streaked dark green pods, rich old-fashioned flavor, and excellent tolerance to hot, dry conditions. Vigorous vines produce round pods that are stringless and especially tender when harvested young, making this a dependable and flavorful choice for warm-season gardens.
Sow ‘Rattlesnake’ directly in the garden about 1 inch deep after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Space plants about 2 inches apart and grow in full sun. Vines typically reach 6 to 10 feet tall, so provide a trellis, fence, or other sturdy support. This drought-tolerant variety performs especially well through hot summer conditions.
Ready to harvest in about 70 days, begin picking the 7- to 8-inch pods while they are still young and tender for snap beans. Allow the beans to mature further for fresh shell beans, or leave the pods on the vines until fully dry for storage.
Tender, flavorful, and versatile, ‘Rattlesnake’ is excellent for fresh cooking, canning, freezing, shelling, and drying.
