Growing Picus Hybrid Roma Paste Tomato

‘Picus’ is a hybrid paste tomato prized for setting fruit reliably in hot temperatures. Large, blocky Roma-shaped fruits mature deep red and contain firm, flavorful flesh ideal for processing.

Start ‘Picus’ indoors for transplanting. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep, space plants 16 to 24 inches apart after transplanting, and grow in full sun. Vigorous plants provide good foliage protection against sunscald and are noted for disease resistance.

Ready to harvest in about 79 days, pick fruits once they reach full size and mature deep red color.

Firm, meaty, and flavorful, ‘Picus’ is especially well suited to sauces and pastes.

Good canning tomato!

Productive and a good choice for canning. Large Roma type tomatoes; I canned whole tomatoes, but these are large and might be better diced!

I set my seedlings out early, had a few problems with blossom end rot and and blight. (I have a small garden with limited space for rotation so expected.) They seemed to tolerate the heat well. They are Determinate, they produced their crop, and I was able to remove them and replant the area with the next vegetable planting.

Best canning tomato ever

The best canning tomato ever. Surpasses Viva Italia of old. Amazingly prolific, no blossom end rot during the hottest summer on record.
