De Cicco Heirloom Broccoli
Growing De Cicco Heirloom Broccoli
‘De Cicco’ is a classic Italian heirloom broccoli prized for its extended harvest period, tender flavor, and dependable production. Introduced to the United States in the 1890s, plants produce a central blue-green head followed by numerous smaller side shoots, giving gardeners multiple harvests from a single planting.
Start ‘De Cicco’ indoors about ¼ inch deep for transplanting. Space plants 18 to 36 inches apart and grow in full sun. Plants typically reach 24 to 36 inches tall and perform best in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. This annual variety is well suited for spring and fall growing.
Ready to harvest in about 63 days, cut the main 3- to 4-inch head once the buds are still tight and well formed. Removing the central head encourages additional side shoots, which can be harvested as they develop for repeated cuts over a longer period.
Tender, flavorful, and productive, ‘De Cicco’ is excellent for fresh cooking, steaming, roasting, and freezing.
