Chive
Growing Chive
Chives are an open-pollinated herb prized for its mild onion flavor, grass-like foliage, and beautiful lavender-pink flower clusters. Easy to grow indoors or outdoors, the slender leaves provide fresh seasoning while globe-shaped blooms add ornamental appeal to the herb garden.
Start chives indoors for transplanting or sow directly where conditions allow. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep and space plants 2 to 8 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade. This cold-tolerant variety is also well suited to containers.
Ready to begin harvesting in about 80 days, snip leaves as needed once plants are established.
Mild, fresh, and versatile, chives are excellent for potatoes, eggs, soups, dips, salads, garnishes, and everyday seasoning.
