Growing Chandler Spring-Bearing Strawberry Plants

‘Chandler’ is a top-performing spring-bearing strawberry variety prized for its exceptionally large berries, rich flavor, and heavy yields. Developed by the University of California, it produces glossy red fruit with firm texture and excellent sweetness, making it a favorite for both home gardens and commercial growing.

Plant ‘Chandler’ strawberries in full sun, spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart in rows 3 to 4 feet apart. Set each plant so the crown sits at soil level, taking care not to bury it. Choose rich, well-drained soil with a pH of about 5.8 to 6.5, keep the soil evenly moist—especially during flowering and fruiting—and apply mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

As a spring-bearing variety, ‘Chandler’ produces one large crop in early summer. Vigorous, disease-tolerant plants perform well in both raised beds and containers and are best suited to USDA Zones 5–9.

Large, firm, and flavorful, ‘Chandler’ strawberries are excellent for fresh eating, canning, freezing, desserts, and preserves. Its combination of impressive berry size, dependable production, and excellent flavor makes it a standout choice for gardeners who want a productive spring harvest.

Shipping Notice: This item ships directly from our grower on a separate seasonal schedule from Seeds ’n Such seed orders. Live plants ship when weather conditions are suitable for your USDA zone. A flat $12 Live Plant Shipping Fee applies to each order containing berry plants.

Chandler Strawberry Plants

I bought 60 plants . 57 of them were plantable . 30 of them have died since planting .
I was very excited to finally get some Chandler plants . I’ve grown strawberries for over 55 years as a hobby and as a pick your own farm .
I’m very disappointed in the quality of these plants !
I would love to have some plants that were a good quality though .
I still want to try the Chandler variety .
Any suggestions ?

Received 24 plants and because garden spot was wet put the plants in separate small plastic pots under a grow light Despite good care only 14 of the plants survived to planting in my garden a week ago.

Chandler strawberries

These bare root strawberries were planted within hours of their arrival. Triple superphosphate in granular form was applied and the plants were watered. 30 percent of these strawberries are in bloom just weeks after installation. Next year should have more fruit and new runner plants. I am happy with this great start.

Only 9 plants are growing, the others never grew or died after they started to grow

Thriving

I received 25 plants early this Spring. They all looked pretty healthy. I planted them as soon as they arrived. They're all thriving except one! And blossoms are starting to come out. So that they'll put their strength in runners, I am pinching off the blossoms; therefore, I will not be able to review until next year whether or not they produce well.
