Growing Cardinal Spring-Bearing Strawberry Plants

‘Cardinal’ is a vigorous spring-bearing strawberry variety prized for its large berries, rich flavor, and dependable yields. Bred at the University of Maryland, it produces bright red fruit with excellent texture and a sweet, full flavor that makes it a favorite for home gardens.

Plant ‘Cardinal’ strawberries in full sun, spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart in rows 3 to 4 feet apart. Set each plant so the crown sits at soil level, taking care not to bury it. Choose rich, well-drained soil with a pH of about 5.8 to 6.5, keep the soil evenly moist—especially during flowering and fruiting—and apply mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

As a spring-bearing variety, ‘Cardinal’ produces one large crop in early to mid-summer. Vigorous, hardy, disease-tolerant plants perform well in home gardens, raised beds, and containers and are best suited to USDA Zones 5–9.

Large, sweet, and flavorful, ‘Cardinal’ strawberries are excellent for fresh eating, preserves, freezing, desserts, and other everyday uses. Its combination of strong production, dependable garden performance, and premium-quality fruit makes it a reliable choice for strawberry growers.

Satisfied

I looked for Cardinals for quite some time because I grew them years ago. Out of the 39 starters about 30 have lived and are growing great. What I was disappointed in was the delivery the plants were left at the end of my quarter mile driveway for how long, not sure.

Disappointed

I have contacted the seller and have received a refund as the plants were in poor condition when received. They suggested I first plant what appeared viable but even the ones that lived are not healthy and were a waste of time and effort to plant. Order as printed is in error as only 24 were ordered and shipped. Nine were plantable (had a crown and some white roots) and right now only seven survive and they look anemic-maybe two look OK. Unless they make a great improvement I will remove all .
