Growing Independence Day Tomato

‘Independence Day’ is an extra-early tomato prized for delivering flavorful homegrown fruits near the beginning of summer and one of our 2026 Free Seed varieties. Round pink tomatoes offer rich, classic tomato flavor that is unusual among varieties bred for such quick maturity.

Plant ‘Independence Day’ seeds about ¼ inch deep and space plants 24 to 36 inches apart. Germination typically takes 5 to 10 days. Grow in full sun. This heat-tolerant variety performs well as summer temperatures rise.

Ready to harvest in about 55 days, begin picking fruits once they reach full size and develop their mature pink color.

Early, flavorful, and dependable, ‘Independence Day’ is excellent for fresh eating and slicing.

Not impressed

Small cocktail size, with large green cores that fill most of the fruit. Tomato rots on vine before shoulders even begin to show blush.

Not impressed

I’m glad these were free. They were the first to sprout and set fruit. The tomatoes never got very big. Like a glorified cherry tomato without flavor. Odd shaped leaves as well.

The least tasty tomato I have ever grown

I got these as part of the free seeds that came with my order. They germinated and grew beautifully.

The fruit is pretty small, around the size of a small cocktail tomato and the tomato flavor is worse than a dry grocery store tomato. I just don't get it. They look and feel like they're going to be tasty, and they just lack any sweetness or tomatoey flavor whatsoever. I'm actually going to rip out the plants and put some clones from something else in there because I feel like they're just going to go to waste.

The plants are extremely unruly for a determinate variety as well. They have big weird leaves and suckers everywhere. They certainly are... prolific though. Picture added is next to Chef's Choice yellow on the left. They're basically a rat's nest in comparison. Scads of unpleasant fruits under there, so I'm giving them a 2 star for their lust for life and shear amount of fruit.

Free seeds are worth what was paid!

Independence Day tomatoes were including as a free gift for one of my orders. Germination was good. I planted them in 2' container beds. They grew great until this heat wave. Even though they are watched carefully, and watered when needed, the fruit will never reach the size pictured. Beware of free seeds!

The first of all of my plants to get tomatoes!

this plant is everything that they said it was! It is the first in my garden to set fruit! I cannot wait for the harvest!
