Growing Information

Growing El Capitan Seedless Hybrid Watermelon

‘El Capitan’ is a seedless Crimson Sweet–type watermelon prized for its impressive size, reliable performance, and excellent eating quality. Large, blocky-oval fruits weigh about 16 to 20 pounds and develop attractive dark green striping around firm, deep red flesh that is exceptionally sweet, crisp, and refreshing.

Start ‘El Capitan’ indoors for transplanting or sow directly where conditions allow. Plant seeds about ½ to 1 inch deep, space plants 3 to 5 feet apart, and grow in full sun. For best sowing, orient each seed with the pointed end facing down. Vigorous vines offer excellent disease tolerance, and a pollinator is included to support fruit set.

Ready to harvest in about 90 days, pick fruits once they are fully mature and have developed their characteristic rind color, size, and deep red interior.

Sweet, crisp, and refreshing, ‘El Capitan’ is an excellent choice for fresh eating and produces uniform, high-quality fruit with good keeping and shipping ability.

Pollinator included.

Not worth the effort

Only two of the five seeds germinated and we only got one small watermelon
The pollinator, however, grew like crazy and we got a number of yellow seeded watermelons which were very sweet

None of the seedless seeds germinated, only the pollinator.

None of the seedless watermelon seeds germinated. The only ones that did were the pollinator seed. Yes that's a pic of my garden, I do know what I'm doing....
