The Black Hawk Raspberry is a vigorous, summer-bearing black raspberry variety prized for its rich, sweet flavor and heavy yields of firm, dark fruit. Introduced by Iowa State University, Black Hawk produces large, glossy black berries perfect for fresh eating, freezing, and preserves.
This cold-hardy variety performs beautifully in USDA Zones 5–8, offering reliable crops year after year. The berries ripen in midseason and have excellent flavor balance — making Black Hawk one of the most dependable black raspberries for home gardens and small farms alike.

Planting & Care:
- Full sun; space plants 3–4 ft apart in rows 8–10 ft apart
- Plant in rich, well-drained soil (pH 6.0–6.8)
- Keep soil evenly moist during the first growing season
- Provide light trellising or wire supports to manage canes
- Tip-prune new canes in summer when they reach 24–30" to encourage branching
- Remove old canes after fruiting each year
- Performs best in Zones 5–8
