Small Sugar Pumpkin
Growing Small Sugar Pumpkin
‘Small Sugar,’ also known as 'New England Pie,' is an open-pollinated pumpkin prized for its exceptional eating quality and thick, meaty orange flesh. Compact fruits are famous for pie making, although larger specimens can also be used for Halloween carving.
Start ‘Small Sugar’ indoors for transplanting or sow directly where conditions allow. Plant seeds about 1 inch deep, space plants about 36 inches apart, and grow in full sun. This heat-tolerant variety produces prolific vines that can also be trained onto a trellis.
Ready to harvest in about 95 days, pick fruits once the rind is fully mature and the deep orange flesh has developed its best quality.
Sweet, meaty, and classic, ‘Small Sugar’ is excellent for pies, canning, baking, everyday cooking, and seasonal decorating.
