‘Rattlesnake’ Pole Bean is a century-old heirloom known for its distinctive purple-streaked, dark green pods and rich, old-fashioned bean flavor. The vigorous vines produce round pods that are stringless and especially tender when harvested young.
Sow ‘Rattlesnake’ directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. The climbing plants need a trellis, fence, or other sturdy support and are well suited to hot, dry conditions thanks to their excellent drought tolerance.
Harvest the pods while they are young and tender for use as snap beans, or allow them to mature further for shell beans. Pods can also be left on the vines until fully dry for storage and later use.
‘Rattlesnake’ beans are excellent for fresh cooking, canning, freezing, shelling, and drying, making this adaptable heirloom a versatile choice for the home garden.
