Napa Chinese (Sui Choy) Cabbage
Growing Napa Chinese (Sui Choy) Cabbage
‘Sui Choy’ is a cool-season Napa Chinese cabbage prized for its firm, cylindrical heads, crisp ribs, and sweet, tangy flavor. Tightly packed, crinkled leaves are light green on the outside with pale yellow interiors and prominent, celery-like ribs, giving this variety a tender texture with a satisfying crunch.
Start ‘Sui Choy’ indoors about ¼ inch deep for transplanting. Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart and grow in full sun to partial shade. Plants typically reach 8 to 18 inches tall and produce heads around 11 inches long. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture to encourage quick, even growth and well-formed heads.
Ready to harvest in about 55 days, cut the heads once they feel firm, tightly packed, and have reached the desired size.
Sweet, crisp, and versatile, ‘Sui Choy’ is excellent for stir-fries, wraps, salads, slaws, soups, and other Asian-style dishes.
