Avalanche Beet
Growing Avalanche Beet
‘Avalanche’ is an award-winning beet and 2015 All-America Selections Winner prized for its smooth, pure white roots, exceptionally mild flavor, and dependable garden performance. Unlike many traditional beets, the round roots have little to no earthy taste or bitter aftertaste, offering a sweet, clean flavor that appeals even to gardeners who do not usually enjoy beets.
Sow ‘Avalanche’ directly in the garden about ¼ inch deep during the cooler temperatures of spring or fall. Space plants about 12 inches apart and grow in full sun. Plants typically reach 12 to 16 inches tall and perform best in loose, well-drained soil with consistent moisture as the roots develop.
Ready to harvest in about 51 days, begin pulling the 2- to 3-inch roots once they reach your preferred size while they are still firm and tender. Younger roots offer an especially crisp texture, while larger roots remain excellent for cooking.
Sweet, mild, and versatile, ‘Avalanche’ is excellent for fresh eating, salads, roasting, and baking.
