Walla Walla Sweet Onion Plants
Growing Walla Walla Sweet Onion Plants
‘Walla Walla’ is a famously sweet onion prized for its exceptionally mild flavor, large size, and tender texture. Often compared to Vidalia onions for sweetness, it produces broad, slightly flattened globe-shaped bulbs with attractive golden skin and crisp white flesh.
Plant ‘Walla Walla’ onion transplants in full sun, setting them about 1 to 1½ inches deep and spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Choose loose, well-drained soil and water thoroughly after planting to help the transplants establish. Although technically considered day-neutral, ‘Walla Walla’ performs best when grown as a long-day onion.
Ready to harvest in about 110 days, pull onions once the bulbs have reached full size and the tops begin to naturally fall over. Allow the bulbs to cure before use or short-term storage.
Mild, juicy, and exceptionally sweet, ‘Walla Walla’ is excellent for fresh eating, slicing, salads, sandwiches, grilling, roasting, and other dishes where a gentle onion flavor is preferred.
