Patterson Hybrid Onion Plants
Growing Patterson Hybrid Onion Plants
‘Patterson’ is a dependable long-day hybrid onion prized for its excellent storage potential, uniform bulbs, and attractive copper-brown skin. Developed as a strong replacement for the discontinued ‘Copra,’ it produces firm, high-quality bulbs with crisp ivory-white flesh and outstanding keeping ability.
Plant ‘Patterson’ onion transplants in full sun, setting them about 1 to 1½ inches deep and spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Choose loose, well-drained soil and water thoroughly after planting to help the transplants establish. As a long-day onion, ‘Patterson’ performs best in northern growing regions where longer summer days support strong bulb development.
Ready to harvest in about 110 days, pull onions once the bulbs have reached full size and the tops begin to naturally fall over. Allow the bulbs to cure thoroughly before storage. When properly cured and stored, ‘Patterson’ can keep for up to a year.
Crisp, versatile, and dependable, ‘Patterson’ is excellent for slicing, sautéing, roasting, soups, stews, and everyday cooking. Its exceptional storage life makes it an especially strong choice for gardeners who want a reliable onion for long-term pantry use.
