White Yam Sweet Potato Plants
Growing White Yam Sweet Potato Plants
‘White Yam’ is a distinctive heirloom sweet potato prized for its cotton-white skin and flesh, exceptionally sweet flavor, and notably dry texture. One of our most unusual sweet potato varieties, it offers a very different eating experience from traditional orange-fleshed types.
Plant ‘White Yam’ sweet potato slips after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has thoroughly warmed. Choose a location in full sun with loose, well-drained soil, and space plants about 12 to 18 inches apart. Set each slip deeply enough to cover the lower stem and roots while keeping the upper leaves above the soil line. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while plants become established.
Ready to harvest in about 110 days, dig roots once they have reached a useful size and before cold weather arrives. Harvest carefully to avoid bruising or cutting the skin, then cure freshly dug sweet potatoes before eating or storing for the best flavor and keeping quality.
Sweet, dry-textured, and uniquely flavored, ‘White Yam’ is excellent for baking, roasting, mashing, and other dishes where a firmer, less-moist sweet potato is preferred.
