Growing Purple Majesty Sweet Potato Plants

‘Purple Majesty’ is a highly productive sweet potato variety prized for its striking deep purple skin and vibrant purple flesh. Developed by NC State University, it produces consistent yields of tapered roots with rich color that holds well after cooking. The purple flesh is naturally rich in anthocyanins and antioxidants, making this variety as eye-catching on the plate as it is productive in the garden.

Plant ‘Purple Majesty’ sweet potato slips after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has thoroughly warmed. Choose a location in full sun with loose, well-drained soil, and space plants about 12 to 18 inches apart. Set each slip deeply enough to cover the lower stem and roots, leaving the upper leaves above the soil line. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while plants establish, then allow the vigorous vines to spread as they grow.

Ready to harvest in about 100 days, begin digging once the roots have reached a useful size and before cold weather arrives. Harvest carefully to avoid bruising or cutting the skins. For the best flavor and storage quality, cure freshly harvested sweet potatoes before eating or storing them.

Richly colored, productive, and versatile, ‘Purple Majesty’ is excellent for roasting, baking, mashing, and adding vibrant color to vegetable dishes. Pair it with orange- or white-fleshed sweet potatoes for an especially colorful harvest.

Shipping Notice: Sweet potato plants ship directly from our supplier on a seasonal schedule. Most orders begin shipping around mid-April, with shipping continuing through June 5th. Because timing can vary, we recommend planning for delivery no earlier than April 15th.

1/3 of the plants died

Not sure if this is expected or not- my first time growing sweet potatoes but about 1/3 of the slips didn't take. Other plants look pretty good. Excited to see how the potatoes grow

Best Sweet Potato Harvest

I have been growing sweet potatoes for several years. I am an organic gardener so I don't use synthetic insecticides. These potatoes are almost flawless. They are resistant to wire worms and other pests. I doubt if I will ever return to standard sweet potatoes.

Arrived in GREAT condition! Much better than ones that I had ordered from elsewhere that didn't live. They are all alive, happy and growing!
