Growing Centennial Sweet Potato Plants

‘Centennial’ is a classic sweet potato variety prized for its smooth orange skin, dark orange flesh, and dependable garden performance. Long considered one of America’s favorite sweet potatoes, it is especially valued for its strong disease tolerance, excellent storage quality, and moist, flavorful flesh.

Plant ‘Centennial’ sweet potato slips after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has thoroughly warmed. Choose a location in full sun with loose, well-drained soil, and space plants about 12 to 18 inches apart. Set each slip deeply enough to cover the lower stem and roots while keeping the upper leaves above the soil line. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while plants become established.

Ready to harvest in about 100 days, with smaller “baby baker” roots developing in as little as 90 days. Dig carefully once the roots have reached a useful size and before cold weather arrives. Cure freshly harvested sweet potatoes before eating or storing for the best flavor and keeping quality.

Moist, sweet, and versatile, ‘Centennial’ is excellent for baking, roasting, mashing, casseroles, and everyday cooking. Its dependable yields, disease tolerance, and good storage make it a strong choice for both new and experienced gardeners.

Shipping Notice: Sweet potato plants ship directly from our supplier on a seasonal schedule. Most orders begin shipping around mid-April, with shipping continuing through June 5th. Because timing can vary, we recommend planning for delivery no earlier than April 15th.

Sweet potato plants

We live in Southwest Michigan and have been ordering plants from Seeds-N-Such since they began selling them. We have always ended up with more survivor plants than we ordered and they produced well. Sometimes they arrive slimy, leafless, or black because they have been lying in a postal truck, but we plant them anyway and they grow.

Slips are small

Not super impressed. Some of the slips were tiny. They arrive very distressed and do perk up after some care, but some are just too tiny to thrive.
