Growing Horseradish Plants

Horseradish is a hardy, long-lived perennial prized for its pungent roots and bold, spicy flavor. Freshly grated roots are traditionally used to make horseradish sauce and add a sharp, distinctive kick to meats, marinades, dressings, and other savory dishes.

Plant horseradish in full sun, spacing plants 18 to 24 inches apart in rows 24 to 36 inches apart. Set crowns or root cuttings at about a 45° angle, 2 to 3 inches deep, in well-drained soil. Keep the soil consistently moist while plants establish, and fertilize lightly in spring and again in midsummer with compost or a balanced fertilizer.

Best suited to USDA Zones 3–9, horseradish is vigorous, cold-hardy, and highly dependable once established. Harvest roots in late fall after frost for the best flavor. For continued production from year to year, leave a few side roots in the ground to regrow.

Bold, spicy, and versatile, fresh horseradish is excellent for homemade sauces, condiments, marinades, roast beef, seafood, and other savory dishes. Its durability and perennial growth make it an easy addition to productive home gardens.

Shipping Notice: This item ships directly from our grower on a separate seasonal schedule from Seeds ’n Such seed orders.
