Catawba Grape Plants
Growing Catawba Grape Plants
‘Catawba’ is a classic pinkish-red American grape variety prized for its sweet, aromatic flavor and distinctive tang. Popular for more than 150 years, it produces attractive clusters of translucent pink fruit and remains a longtime favorite for juice, jelly, and wine.
Plant ‘Catawba’ in full sun, spacing vines about 6 to 8 feet apart with 8 to 10 feet between rows. Choose well-drained soil and provide a sturdy trellis, arbor, or fence for support. Water regularly while vines are establishing, fertilize lightly in early spring, and prune annually in late winter to encourage strong new canes and productive fruiting wood.
Best suited to USDA Zones 5–8, ‘Catawba’ is vigorous, high yielding, and cold-tolerant. It ripens later than ‘Concord’ or ‘Niagara,’ helping extend the grape harvest into the later part of the season. It is self-pollinating, so only one plant is needed for fruit production. Remove any fruit during the first year to allow the plant to focus on establishing a strong root system.
Sweet, aromatic, and versatile, ‘Catawba’ grapes are excellent for fresh eating, juice, jelly, wine, and other kitchen uses. Its dependable production, late ripening, and classic flavor make it a strong choice for home gardens and small vineyards.
