Growing Red Mountain Hybrid Plants

‘Red Mountain’ is a dependable long-day hybrid onion prized for its deep red color, jumbo-sized bulbs, and excellent storage potential. Developed as an improvement over ‘Red Zeppelin,’ it offers more consistent performance, better color, and longer keeping quality, with crisp white flesh beneath attractive red skin.

Plant ‘Red Mountain’ onion transplants in full sun, setting them about 1 to 1½ inches deep and spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Choose loose, well-drained soil and water thoroughly after planting to help the transplants establish. As a long-day onion, ‘Red Mountain’ performs best in northern growing regions where longer summer days support strong bulb development.

Ready to harvest in about 118 days, pull onions once the bulbs have reached full size and the tops begin to naturally fall over. Allow the bulbs to cure thoroughly before storage. When properly cured and stored, ‘Red Mountain’ can keep for up to 6 months.

Crisp, flavorful, and versatile, ‘Red Mountain’ is excellent for slicing, salads, sandwiches, grilling, roasting, sautéing, and everyday cooking. Its bold color, large size, and dependable storage make it a strong choice for both fresh use and pantry keeping.

Shipping Notice: This item ships directly from our supplier on a separate seasonal schedule. Most orders begin arriving in late January to early February, so we recommend planning accordingly if you need plants by a specific date.
