Growing Information

Growing Prizehead Heirloom Lettuce

‘Prizehead’ is a classic heirloom looseleaf lettuce (and our 2022 Free Seed Giveaway) prized for its vigorous growth, crisp-sweet flavor, and colorful foliage. Large curly green leaves develop attractive bronze-red shading along the outer margins, creating an edible crop that is as attractive as it is flavorful.

Start ‘Prizehead’ indoors for transplanting. Plant seeds about ⅛ inch deep and space plants 8 to 10 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade. This cold-tolerant variety is well suited to containers and hydroponic growing.

Ready to harvest in about 50 days, pick individual leaves at the size you prefer, choosing younger growth for the most tender texture.

Crisp, sweet, and colorful, ‘Prizehead’ is excellent for fresh eating, salads, sandwiches, wraps, and mixed greens.

Prizehead Lettuce Review

I tried the Prizehead Lettuce on the 2022 giveaway and was not disappointed. In fact, I will use Prizehead lettuce in my garden from now on. The plant grew about 4 feet tall with beautiful leaves. Lasted well into the summer and I also planted it in the fall for more of the treat. My husband is not a fan of loose lettuce but he loves this one.
Sending seeds for growers to try when they ordinarily would not try is genius.
