Growing Information

Growing Purple Tomatillo

‘Purple’ is a tomatillo prized for its beautiful coloring and sweeter flavor compared with many traditional green types. The fruits deepen to a richer purple shade the longer they remain on the plant.

Start ‘Purple’ indoors for transplanting. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep, space plants 18 to 24 inches apart, and grow in full sun. This heat-tolerant variety performs well during warm weather.

Ready to harvest in about 70 days, allow fruits to develop a rich purple color for maximum visual appeal. Remove the husks before cooking.

Sweet, colorful, and versatile, ‘Purple’ is excellent for fresh eating, sauces, salsa, and everyday cooking.

Most seeds germinated well.

Most of the 12 seeds from different tomato varieties germinated. However, only one Lemon Boy sprouted (late), and just four Big Beef seeds and 2 of the 6 Saucy Lady's. These photos were taken 8 days after planting.
