Growing Information

Growing Jalafuego Hybrid Jalapeño Pepper

‘Jalafuego’ is a large-fruited hybrid jalapeño prized for its bold heat, smooth peppers, and dependable productivity. Fruits typically reach about 3½ to 4 inches long and mature from dark green to red. With a heat level of about 4,000 to 6,000 Scoville Heat Units, this variety delivers classic jalapeño flavor with a noticeable kick.

Start ‘Jalafuego’ indoors for transplanting. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep, space plants 12 to 18 inches apart, and grow in full sun. Plants reach about 30 inches tall and produce generous yields of smooth, crack-resistant fruits. This variety is resistant to Potato Virus, Bacterial Leaf Spot, and Pepper Mottle.

Ready to harvest in about 70 days for green peppers or about 93 days for fully red fruit. Pick at the green stage for classic jalapeño flavor and heat, or allow peppers to ripen red for a sweeter, more developed flavor.

Spicy, flavorful, and versatile, ‘Jalafuego’ is excellent for poppers, salsa, sauces, pickling, grilling, and fresh use.

The only Jalapeño I grow now

Jalafuego is the answer to a true jalapeño flavor with a lot of heat! It seemed like jalapeños (both store-bought and home-grown) got milder and milder over the years, but since I discovered Jalafuegos a few years ago, it's the only one I will grow. Performs beautifully in the garden, with good germination, fast growing, and disease/pest resistant. AND I have also managed to grow several crops in a tabletop hydroponic garden! Win-win-win!

Just right

The only jalapeño I grow, large size, prolific, hardy and hot but not too hot.

Jalafuego Pepper

Planted on 3/22/25 in Jiffy seven peat pots. Were placed on heat mat and humidity dome- 9 of the 12 seeds germinated. They are strong vigorous plants about 3” tall now with 3 sets of true leaves.
