The Tifblue Blueberry is one of the most popular and dependable Rabbiteye varieties, prized for its sweet-tart flavor, vigorous growth, and high heat tolerance. This Southern classic produces medium-to-large berries that ripen mid- to late-season, offering reliable yields year after year.

Developed by the USDA, Tifblue thrives in USDA Zones 7–9, where Northern Highbush varieties struggle. Its berries are perfect for fresh eating, baking, or freezing, and the plant’s attractive foliage makes it a standout addition to Southern landscapes.

1-Year vs. 2-Year Plants

Both options are healthy, nursery-grown stock — the difference lies in their size and how quickly they’ll establish and begin fruiting:

  • 1-Year Plants (9–15") – Smaller, younger plants ideal for long-term growth. They’ll focus on root development during their first season, leading to vigorous production in later years.
  • 2-Year Plants (16–24") – Larger and more mature, ready to establish quickly. These plants often produce a light crop the following season and reach full productivity sooner.

Key Features:

  • Reliable, high-yielding Rabbiteye variety for the South
  • Medium-to-large berries with balanced sweet-tart flavor
  • Excellent heat and drought tolerance
  • Vigorous, long-lived, and low-maintenance
  • Performs best in Zones 7–9

Planting & Care:

  • Full sun (6+ hours daily) for best yields
  • Space 5-6 ft apart in rows 10-12 ft apart
  • Plant in well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5); amend withpine bark or peat moss to improve acidity
  • Keep soil evenly moist; mulch with pine bark or pine needles
  • Fertilize lightly in early and late spring with an acid-form fertilizer
  • Avoid planting in heavy clay or poorly drained soil
  • Protect fruit from birds as berries ripen
  • Pollination: Tifblue is not fully self-pollinating — plant with another Rabbiteye variety such as Climax for the best yields and berry size
