Natchez Thornless Blackberry Plants
Growing Natchez Thornless Blackberry Plants
‘Natchez’ is a high-performing thornless blackberry variety prized for its extra-large, glossy berries, exceptional flavor, and very early harvests. One of the earliest blackberries to ripen, ‘Natchez’ typically begins producing about 7 to 10 days ahead of many other varieties, delivering firm, sweet fruit on vigorous, upright plants.
Plant ‘Natchez’ in full sun, spacing plants about 3 to 4 feet apart. Choose fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of about 6.0 to 6.8, and keep the soil evenly moist, especially during the first year while plants become established. Prune out old fruiting canes after harvest to encourage healthy new growth and continued production.
Best suited to USDA Zones 5–10, ‘Natchez’ is highly productive and offers good resistance to common blackberry diseases. Plants may produce a light crop the first year and typically reach fuller production by the second year. Once established, berries generally ripen about 35 to 45 days after bloom.
Large, sweet, and firm, ‘Natchez’ blackberries are excellent for fresh eating, freezing, jams, preserves, desserts, and other kitchen uses. Thornless canes also make harvesting easier and more comfortable.
