Cumberland Summer-Bearing Raspberry Plants
Growing Cumberland Summer-Bearing Raspberry Plants
‘Cumberland’ is a long-time favorite summer-bearing black raspberry variety prized for its sweet flavor, firm texture, and dependable yields. Introduced more than a century ago, it continues to produce clusters of glossy black berries with rich flavor on vigorous, sturdy canes.
Plant ‘Cumberland’ raspberries in full sun, spacing plants about 3 to 4 feet apart in rows 8 to 10 feet apart. Choose rich, well-drained soil with a pH of about 6.0 to 6.8, and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season while plants establish. Provide light trellising or wire supports to help manage the canes as they grow.
Best suited to USDA Zones 5–8, ‘Cumberland’ is cold-hardy, disease-resistant, and reliably productive. Tip-prune new canes in summer once they reach about 24 to 30 inches tall to encourage branching, and remove old canes after fruiting each year to support healthy new growth.
Sweet, firm, and richly flavored, ‘Cumberland’ raspberries are excellent for fresh eating, jams, preserves, freezing, desserts, and other kitchen uses. Its dependable midseason harvest and proven garden performance make it a strong choice for both home gardens and small-scale growing.
