Growing Information

Growing Sugar Baby Icebox Heirloom Watermelon

‘Sugar Baby Icebox’ is a classic heirloom watermelon prized for its compact vines and intensely sweet flavor. Small, round fruits develop nearly black rinds surrounding vibrant orange-red flesh that is crisp, juicy, and refreshing.

Start ‘Sugar Baby Icebox’ indoors for transplanting. Plant seeds about 1 inch deep, space plants about 18 inches apart, and grow in full sun. For best sowing, orient each seed with the pointed end facing down. Compact vines are well suited to smaller gardens, raised beds, and space-saving growing.

Ready to harvest in about 75 days, pick fruits once they are fully mature and the orange-red flesh has reached peak sweetness.

Crisp, juicy, and exceptionally sweet, ‘Sugar Baby Icebox’ is excellent for fresh eating and easy refrigerator-sized summer harvests.

Disease Notice: Watermelon Fruit Blotch is a bacterial disease that has caused significant crop loss in the southern United States. All Sugar Baby seed is screened by suppliers before shipping. Until a cure is found, orders are limited to 300 seeds per variety per customer.
