Blacktail Mountain Watermelon
Growing Blacktail Mountain Watermelon
‘Blacktail Mountain’ is an heirloom watermelon prized for its adaptability to both short seasons and warm, humid climates. Round fruits develop greenish-black rinds surrounding juicy, deep red flesh with a sugar-sweet flavor.
Sow ‘Blacktail Mountain’ directly in the garden about ½ to 1 inch deep, space plants 18 to 36 inches apart, and grow in full sun. For best sowing, orient each seed with the pointed end facing down. This cold-tolerant variety can perform even where summer nights become quite cool.
Ready to harvest in about 75 days, pick fruits once they are fully mature and have developed their characteristic dark rind and sweet interior.
Juicy, sweet, and adaptable, ‘Blacktail Mountain’ is excellent for fresh eating.
