Growing Information

Growing Old German Heirloom Tomato

‘Old German’ is an heirloom tomato prized for its enormous orange-red fruits and traditional garden character. Boat-shaped tomatoes develop thick, meaty flesh and make especially impressive slicers.

Start ‘Old German’ indoors for transplanting. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep, space plants 24 to 36 inches apart, and grow in full sun. This heat-tolerant variety performs well during warm summer weather.

Ready to harvest in about 75 days, pick fruits once they reach full size and develop their mature orange-red coloring.

Large, meaty, and flavorful, ‘Old German’ is especially well suited to slicing.

Unreliable but delicious

I've grown at least one plant of Old German each summer for over ten years. I keep trying because every few years they produce the tastiest, sweetest slicing tomatoes. The first year, I started harvesting when they were yellow and they were good. But later I was surprised when the pink stripes appeared. The flavor and sweetness improved. But here in northern Wisconsin, they don't mature to their best each year.
