Growing Beefsteak (Red Ponderosa) Heirloom Beefsteak Tomato
‘Beefsteak,' also called 'Red Ponderosa,' is a classic heirloom beefsteak tomato prized for its enormous fruits and old-fashioned mild flavor. Large, flattened tomatoes feature gently ribbed shoulders, dense meaty flesh, and very few seeds, with individual fruits capable of reaching 2 pounds under good conditions.
Start ‘Beefsteak Red Ponderosa’ indoors for transplanting. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep, space plants 24 to 36 inches apart, and grow in full sun. Heat-tolerant, indeterminate vines benefit from sturdy cages or stakes to support the heavy crop.
Ready to harvest in about 80 days, pick fruits once they have reached full size and mature color.
Mild, meaty, and substantial, ‘Beefsteak Red Ponderosa’ is excellent for slicing, sandwiches, canning, and summer platters.
