New Zealand Spinach
Growing New Zealand Spinach
‘New Zealand,’ also known as 'Tetragonia,' is an heirloom leafy green prized for thriving in hot weather when traditional spinach struggles. Bushy plants produce small, thick, dark green leaves with excellent cooked flavor and continue growing vigorously from spring through fall.
Soak seeds for about 24 hours before planting to help improve germination. Sow directly about ½ inch deep, space plants 4 to 6 inches apart, and grow in full sun to partial shade. This heat-tolerant perennial responds well to repeated cutting.
Ready to harvest in about 65 days, pick leaves at the size you prefer. Regular harvesting encourages plants to produce even more fresh growth.
Tender, productive, and heat loving, ‘New Zealand’ is excellent for sautéing, cooked greens, fresh eating, and everyday cooking.
Soak seeds 24 hours to enhance its 40% germination.
