National Pickling Heirloom Cucumber
Growing National Pickling Heirloom Cucumber
‘National Pickling’ is a classic heirloom cucumber trusted by home gardeners and commercial growers since 1924. Productive plants yield medium-green, blocky fruits with black spines, crisp flesh, and tender skin. Their fresh, mild flavor makes them especially well suited for pickling while also giving gardeners plenty of versatility for fresh use.
Start ‘National Pickling’ indoors for transplanting or sow directly in the garden about ½ inch deep. Space plants about 4 inches apart and grow in full sun. This variety is well suited to containers and smaller gardens and begins producing early for an extended harvest season.
Ready to harvest in about 52 days, begin picking the fruits once they reach a usable size while they are still firm, crisp, and tender. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production and maintain the best texture and flavor.
Crisp, mild, and versatile, ‘National Pickling’ is excellent for fresh eating, pickling, slicing, salads, sandwiches, and snacking.
