Long Island Improved Heirloom Brussels Sprout
Growing Long Island Improved Heirloom Brussels Sprout
‘Long Island Improved’ is a classic heirloom Brussels sprout prized for its dependable production, high yields, and sweet, tender flavor. Sturdy plants produce numerous dark green sprouts along the stalk, each forming a firm, miniature cabbage-like head with excellent eating quality.
Start ‘Long Island Improved’ indoors about ¼ to ½ inch deep for transplanting. Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart and grow in full sun. Plants typically reach 24 to 30 inches tall and perform best in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture.
Ready to harvest in about 90 days, begin picking the 1½-inch sprouts once they are firm and well developed, starting near the bottom of the stalk and working upward as the remaining sprouts mature. Cooler temperatures can help enhance their sweetness and flavor.
Sweet, tender, and dependable, ‘Long Island Improved’ is excellent for roasting, sautéing, steaming, and everyday cooking.
