Little Gem Lettuce
Growing Little Gem Lettuce
‘Little Gem’ is a classic heirloom romaine lettuce prized for its miniature size, crisp texture, and thick blanched heart. Compact green heads provide the satisfying crunch of romaine in a convenient single-serving size.
Start ‘Little Gem’ indoors for transplanting. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep and space plants about 7 inches apart in rows roughly 2 feet apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade. This cold-tolerant variety is also well suited to containers.
Ready to harvest in about 33 days, cut the compact heads once they reach the desired size or pick younger leaves for an earlier harvest.
Crisp, compact, and flavorful, ‘Little Gem’ is excellent for fresh eating, salads, lettuce cups, and sandwiches.
