Lacinato Heirloom Kale
Growing Lacinato Heirloom Kale
‘Lacinato,’ also known as 'Dinosaur Kale' or 'Nero di Toscana,' is an Italian heirloom kale prized for its dark blue-green foliage, heavily crinkled texture, and sweet, succulent flavor. Long leaves develop their best flavor during cool weather, becoming even sweeter after frost.
Start ‘Lacinato’ indoors for transplanting or sow directly where conditions allow. Plant seeds about ¼ inch deep and space plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade. This cold-tolerant variety is also well suited to containers.
Ready to harvest in about 55 days, pick younger leaves for the most tender texture or allow foliage to grow larger for cooking.
Sweet, hearty, and versatile, ‘Lacinato’ is excellent for fresh eating, salads, soups, sautéing, braising, and everyday cooking.
