‘Lutz Green Leaf,’ also known as ‘Winter Keeper,’ is a dependable storage beet known for its extra-large, purplish-crimson roots and sweet flavor that improves after harvest. The glossy green tops with red veining are also edible and make a hearty cooking green.
Sow ‘Lutz Green Leaf’ directly in the garden during the cooler temperatures of spring or fall. Plant in loose, well-drained soil and keep the seedbed consistently moist while seedlings establish. Thin plants as they grow to give the large roots plenty of room to develop.
Harvest the roots once they reach the desired size, especially when growing a crop for winter storage. Properly harvested roots keep well for an extended period and can become sweeter during storage. The leafy tops can also be harvested for cooking while the plants are growing.
