Growing Tifblue Rabbiteye Southern Blueberry Plants

‘Tifblue’ is one of the most popular and dependable Rabbiteye blueberry varieties, prized for its vigorous growth, high yields, and excellent performance in hot Southern climates. Developed by the USDA, it produces medium-to-large berries with a balanced sweet-tart flavor and ripens in the mid- to late season.

Plant ‘Tifblue’ in full sun, spacing plants about 5 to 6 feet apart in rows 10 to 12 feet apart. Choose well-drained, acidic soil with a pH of about 4.5 to 5.5, and amend with materials such as pine bark or peat moss if additional acidity is needed. Keep the soil evenly moist, mulch with pine bark or pine needles, and fertilize lightly in early and late spring with an acid-form fertilizer. Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained planting sites.

Best suited to USDA Zones 7–9, ‘Tifblue’ is vigorous, long-lived, and tolerant of Southern heat and drought once established. It is not fully self-pollinating, so plant it with another Rabbiteye variety such as ‘Climax’ for the best yields and berry size. Protect ripening fruit from birds as needed.

Note: Rabbiteye blueberries perform best in warmer Southern regions (USDA Zones 7–9) and are not recommended for northern climates with harsh winters or low chill hours.

Sweet-tart and versatile, ‘Tifblue’ berries are excellent for fresh eating, baking, freezing, and preserves. The plant’s attractive foliage also makes it a useful addition to edible landscapes and home gardens.

Plant Size Options

  • 1-Year Plants (9–15") — Smaller, younger plants that will spend more time establishing roots during their first season.

  • 2-Year Plants (16–24") — Larger, more mature plants that establish more quickly and may produce a light crop sooner.

Shipping Notice: This item ships directly from our grower on a separate seasonal schedule from Seeds ’n Such seed orders. Live plants ship when weather conditions are suitable for your USDA zone. A flat $12 Live Plant Shipping Fee applies to each order containing berry plants.
