Growing Climax Rabbiteye Southern Blueberry Plants

‘Climax’ is an early-ripening Rabbiteye blueberry variety prized for its exceptional sweetness, heavy yields, and reliable performance in warm Southern climates. Vigorous, upright plants produce clusters of medium-sized berries that ripen uniformly, making harvest especially convenient.

Plant ‘Climax’ in full sun, spacing plants about 5 to 6 feet apart in rows 10 to 12 feet apart. Choose well-drained, acidic soil with a pH of about 4.5 to 5.5, and amend with pine bark or peat moss if additional acidity is needed. Keep the soil evenly moist, mulch with pine bark or pine needles, and fertilize lightly in early and late spring with an acid-form fertilizer. Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained planting sites.

Best suited to USDA Zones 7–9, ‘Climax’ is heat-tolerant, productive, and well adapted to Southern growing conditions. It is not fully self-pollinating, so plant it with another Rabbiteye variety such as ‘Tifblue’ for the best yields and berry size. Protect ripening fruit from birds as needed.

Note: Rabbiteye blueberries perform best in warmer Southern regions (USDA Zones 7–9) and are not recommended for northern climates with harsh winters or low chill hours.

Sweet, firm, and flavorful, ‘Climax’ berries are excellent for fresh eating, baking, freezing, and preserves. Its early ripening, concentrated harvest, and dependable productivity make it a standout choice for Southern gardens.
