Chandler Blueberry Northern Highbush Plants
Growing Chandler Blueberry Northern Highbush Plants
‘Chandler’ is a premium Northern Highbush blueberry variety prized for producing exceptionally large berries—some reaching the size of a quarter. Sweet, rich flavor and an unusually long ripening season make it a standout choice for gardeners who want both impressive fruit size and an extended harvest.
Plant ‘Chandler’ in full sun, spacing plants about 4 to 5 feet apart in rows 8 to 10 feet apart. Choose well-drained, acidic soil with a pH of about 4.5 to 5.5, amending with peat moss or sulfur if needed. Keep the soil evenly moist, mulch with pine bark or pine needles to help maintain acidity, and fertilize lightly in early and late spring with an acid-form fertilizer. Prune lightly during the first two years, then remove weak or older woody stems as plants mature.
Best suited to USDA Zones 4–7, ‘Chandler’ is cold-hardy, vigorous, and highly productive. Its berries ripen gradually over a 4- to 6-week period, providing one of the longest harvest windows among blueberry varieties. ‘Chandler’ is self-pollinating, but planting it near another Northern Highbush variety such as ‘Blueray’ or ‘Bluecrop’ can improve yields and berry size.
Sweet, flavorful, and exceptionally large, ‘Chandler’ blueberries are excellent for fresh eating, baking, freezing, preserves, and desserts. Protect ripening fruit from birds as needed to make the most of the extended harvest.
