The Bluecrop Blueberry is the benchmark Northern Highbush variety, prized for its heavy yields, firm texture, and sweet, classic blueberry flavor. Known for its reliability and adaptability, Bluecrop produces abundant clusters of large, light blue berries that are excellent for fresh eating, baking, and freezing.

A vigorous, upright grower, Bluecrop performs best in USDA Zones 4–8, offering excellent cold hardiness and consistent production year after year. Its balanced sweetness and disease resistance make it a favorite among both home gardeners and small-scale growers.

1-Year vs. 2-Year Plants

Both options are healthy, nursery-grown stock — the difference lies in their size and how quickly they’ll establish and begin fruiting:

  • 1-Year Plants (9–15") – Smaller, younger plants ideal for long-term growth. They’ll focus on root development during their first season, leading to vigorous production in later years.
  • 2-Year Plants (16–24") – Larger and more mature, ready to establish quickly. These plants often produce a light crop the following season and reach full productivity sooner.

Key Features:

  • Northern Highbush variety with heavy yields
  • Large, firm berries with excellent flavor
  • Consistent and cold-hardy performer
  • Great for fresh eating, baking, or freezing
  • Vigorous, disease-resistant plants
  • Performs best in Zones 4–8

Planting & Care:

  • Full sun (6+ hours daily) for best yields
  • Space 4–5 ft apart in rows 8–10 ft apart
  • Plant in well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5); amend with peat moss or sulfur if needed
  • Keep soil evenly moist; mulch with pine bark or pine needles to maintain acidity
  • Fertilize lightly in early and late spring with an acid-form fertilizer
  • Prune lightly the first two years; remove weak or woody stems after year two
  • Protect fruit from birds as berries ripen
  • Pollination: Bluecrop is self-pollinating but produces larger yields and berries when planted near another Northern Highbush variety such as Blueray or Chandler
